Abstract: Light is a dynamically changing environmental factor that influences nearly every aspect of plant growth and development. Photoreceptors detect light; among them, phytochromes (PHY) specifically monitor the red and far-red ranges of the light spectrum. Arabidopsis thaliana possesses five phytochrome genes, designated phyA through phyE. While the roles of phyA and phyB—the primary mediators of most phytochrome responses—are well-documented, the functions of the other phytochromes remain poorly understood. Overexpressing these low-abundance phytochromes in a phytochrome-deficient genetic background allows for the examination of their specific functions and their cooperation with other family members. We found that phyD not only contributes to light perception in coordination with phyC and phyB, but also modulates signaling in response to ambient temperatures.
